Lucy Wells


NORWICH – Lucy P. (Smith) Wells, 92, formerly of Norwich, and more recently of Lisle and Cortland, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland.
Mrs. Wells was born in Oxford on Sept. 21, 1915, a daughter of the late James and Harriet Meade Smith. A lifelong resident of the area, she was employed at Victory Markets in Dryden prior to her retirement. She took great joy in the beauty of nature and spending time watching the birds. She loved her family dearly and was proud that there existed five generations of the family.
She is survived by her daughters, Jean Mayer of Lisle and Joyce Carpenter of Newark Valley. She also leaves behind her stepchildren, Kay Zaia of Norwich, Wanda Kuhn of New Berlin, and Will Wells of Reno, Nev.; a brother-in-law, Everette Wells of Norwich; her devoted grandchildren, Patricia and Susan Keene, Margaret, Shelley, and Wendy Wheaton, Marlita, Kelly and Michael Kuhn, Matthew and Michael Zaia, Terry and Janet Price, Gary, Stephen, Donna and Michael Haight, and Christopher Wells; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and two nieces.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Avery Haight and Wilmer Wells; a son, LeRoy Haight, a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday with Reverend Jerome Katz officiating. Burial will be in Willet Cemetery at a later date. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:30 p.m. 
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Wells may be directed to a food pantry of one’s choice or the Peck Memorial Library, 28 E. Main St., Marathon, NY 13803.
