Gary Golden

NORWICH – Gary L. Golden, 54, life-long resident of Chenango County, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, in the Wilson Regional Hospital of Johnson City.
Born in Norwich in November of 1953, Gary was the son of Graham E. and Roberta A. (Scheuerman) Golden. Following his 1971 graduation from the Norwich High School, he attended SUNY Morrisville for a year with tentative plans to become a gym teacher. An incredibly athletic man who, even in later years, could still do back handsprings on a 6” board, he was also an excellent pool player and was involved in national table tennis tournaments with the USATT. An avid fan of the New York Giants, Gary also loved music. He was well known in the area as the bass player for Ivan Shroud “Shout It Out Loud,” as well as other area bands over the years. The owner of Simplicity Carpet of Norwich and lately of Oxford, Gary began his carpet-installing career working for brother Duane. He then progressed to selling carpet and eventually opened Simplicity Carpet about 15 years ago, working with son Brian. Gary by nature was an outgoing person and, with his involvement in the community, made himself a “gazillion friends” who will miss his friendship. He was a member of the American Legion of Oxford.
Gary is survived by his companion, Cheryl McGowan of Oxford; his son, Brian Golden and his fiancee’ Jessica Sheldon of Oxford; sisters Lori M. Bres and husband John of San Antonio, Texas and Marianne Marano and husband George L. of Schenectady; and his brother, Duane Golden and wife Jodi of Norwich. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Gary will be held at 4 p.m. Friday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Randy Sheldon of Norwich will officiate.
There will be no calling hours.
