James Lewis


SHERBURNE – James E. Lewis, 72, of State Highway 12, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2008 at the VA Medical Center, Syracuse.
He was born May 23, 1935 in Sherburne, a son of George and Marion Meelan Lewis. Jim was a graduate of Sherburne High School in 1954, and then joined the U.S. Army, serving until 1956. On Nov. 4, 1961, he was united in marriage to Vicki Dawn Kelley in Sherburne. A life-long Sherburne resident, Jim was a real estate broker who owned James E. Lewis Real Estate for over 35 years. He was a lifelong sports enthusiast who participated, and excelled, in all forms of athletics, and especially enjoyed football, wrestling, and softball.  Though his illness was debilitating, it never consumed his competitive spirit, his insatiable appetite for life.
Jim was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne. He was a former member of the Sherburne Rotary Club and the B.P.O. Elks of Norwich.
Surviving are Vicki, his wife of 46 years; his children, Kyle Lewis and Shane Lewis, both of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; Kelley, and her husband, Kosta Giannakouros of Edgewater, Fla.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Jean Lewis of Voorheesville; George Lewis, Jr. of Syracuse; Richard and Cynthia Lewis of Earlville; his grandchildren, Caleb Lewis and James Giannakouros; step-grandchildren, Elise and Hristos; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, June Schieffer, a brother, Jack Lewis and a step-grandson, Matthew.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Malachy’s Church, East State St., Sherburne.
Burial will be in St. Malachy’s Parish Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
St. Malachy’s Altar and Rosary Society will recite the rosary on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the VA Medical Center, Syracuse. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
