Gertrude Davis

CINCINNATUS – Gertrude M. Davis, 91, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2006, at her home.
Gertrude came into this world on May 22, 1915 and was named Gertrude Mae Cook. She was the fourth of eight children of Morris (Mot) and Carrie Atkinson Cook of Pitcher. For the first 20 plus years, she was known as “Trudy” to her family and friends. At the age of 14, her mother was suddenly taken from her and she became the mother-figure for her four younger siblings.
One sunny day, a tall, black-haired, blue-eyed young man came to trade horses with her father. Gibson K. Davis struck the “fancy” of Trudy and vice-versa. On Dec. 25, 1934, Gibson and Gertrude became Mr. and Mrs. Gibson Davis.
Gertrude was the mother of four children. The oldest, Grace M. (Andy) Senia of Hancock, Carol A. Davis of Pharsalia, Brenda M. (Donald) Halstrom of Norwich, and Garry G. (Kathy) Davis, also of Pharsalia, who predeceased her on Sept. 29, 2003.  Her husband, Gibson, predeceased her on Dec. 27, 1979.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, Melody Doing, Nathaniel Davis, Carrie McIntosh, and Carmella Bullick; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was always willing to be involved in any community activity. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, served on the Cincinnatus School Board, and held every office (treasurer, secretary, and president) of the UMW (United Methodist Women). She provided chicken and biscuits for the community chicken dinners so much that her biscuits are infamous county-wide. Gertrude always had a smile and a kind word for everyone and her passing will leave a great “emptiness” in the community and the family.
The family will be present to receive friends at the K.L. Sharp Funeral Home, Cincinnatus, on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.  Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of South Otselic with Jeanne Angell officiating.  Burial will be in Wayside Rest Cemetery, Pharsalia.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Gertrude may be directed to the Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
