Newell Chase


BEAVER MEADOW – Newell Charles “Charlie” Chase, 63, passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 at his Beaver Meadow home.
Born in New Britain, Conn., in May of 1944, Charlie was the son of Morris and Arzelia (Kelsey) Chase. He and his family moved to the Oneonta area when he was quite young, and he attended the local schools. He was still living in Oneonta in 1964 when he entered the U.S. Army to serve his country. Honorably discharged in 1969, Charlie returned to Oneonta and lived there for a while before moving to Florida, eventually returning to Oneonta. On Aug. 4, 1992, in Norwich, Charlie married Donalda “Donna” Call. They resided in Syracuse for a short time before settling in Beaver Meadow, where Charlie lived at the time he passed away. During his working years, he was a self-employed roofer who enjoyed woodcrafting, especially making coin and jewelry boxes.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Donna Chase of Beaver Meadow; and his step-children and their spouses: Max and Brenda Law of Beaver Meadow, Don and Sue Law of Binghamton, Doug and Gretchen Smith of Morris, and Betty Lou and James Barron of Springhill, Fla.; his brother, Michael Skrzyneki and wife Linda of Moundsville, W. Va.; 13 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Charlie was predeceased by his brother, Gus Skrzyneki.
Memorial services for Charlie will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford of Norwich will officiate. Interment in St. Paul’s Cemetery, with full military rites, will be held in the spring.
Charlie’s family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY 13815.
