Isabelle Goodwin


GUILFORD – Isabelle S. Goodwin, “Issy”, 94, long-time resident of Guilford, passed away early Thursday morning, Dec. 27, 2007 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in The Bronx in December of 1913, Issy was the daughter of Archibald and Isabella (Johnston) Stavert. When she was 4, she relocated with her family to Otselic Center, where she grew up and attended the Otselic schools. In Issy’s early years, she lived in Norwich and Sherburne, then moved to New Berlin where she worked for the Lindsey Poultry Farm. She moved to Guilford in 1944, and was married in Guilford to Ward M. Goodwin on Jan. 25, 1946. For many years, Issy and Ward owned and operated a dairy farm on the Keach Road. She was very involved in dairy farming most of her life, worked at one time as a milk tester in Chenango County, and belonged to the local 4-H and Home Bureau, the Holstein Association, and the Brown Swiss Association. She was a member of long standing in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Bainbridge.
Issy is survived by her children: Lillian Hawkins and husband Pat of Guilford, Louise Goodwin Butcher of Guilford, and David Goodwin and partner Larry Wohlford of Goodyear, Ariz.; and her grandchildren: Michelle Wessels of Phoenix, Ariz., Gretchen Robertson and husband Tom of Hope Mills, N.C., Brent Wessels and fiancee Jenn Collins of New Berlin, and Brian Butcher of Guilford. She is also survived by her nieces: Karen Goodwin of Florida, Ingrid Fox of Cortland, Nancy Morley of Delhi, Lianne Sprague of Guilford, and Bonnie Yager of Booneville; her nephews, Richard Goodwin Jr. of Guilford and Norman Goodwin of Ohio; several great nieces and great nephews; and her cousins, Katherine Eggleston and husband Robert of Yorktown Heights and Bob McNitt of Norwich. Issy was predeceased by her husband, Ward, in September 1981; and by her sister, Margaret Browning, in September 2005.
Funeral services for Issy will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Bainbridge. The Rev. Marilyn Sanders, a family friend, will officiate. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery of Oxford.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m.
