Gertrude Jaquay


NORWICH – Gertrude T. Jaquay, 94, formerly of Norwich, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, in the Moore Memorial Hospital of Pinehurst, N.C.
Born in Norwich in September of 1913, Gertrude was the daughter of Frank and Emma (Utter) Thompson. Following her years in the Norwich schools, she married Lucius B. Jaquay in Pharsalia on Dec. 31, 1930. Gertrude began her working years with the W.T. Grant Company, and later was employed by the S & H Green Stamp Store as its manager. She was a long-time member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women of Norwich, and contributed many hours of volunteer time, especially on the rummage sales. She also belonged to the Chenango County Historical Society, the Norwich Home Bureau, and the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a founding member of the North Norwich Garden Club. A lady who loved to quilt, she had been a member of a local quilting group. Gertrude had lived in Norwich all of her life until 2005 when she and Lucius moved to North Carolina. Since his death, she had resided with her daughter in Foxfire Village, N.C.
Gertrude is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Gerry LaShomb of Foxfire Village, N.C.; by her grandchildren and their spouses: Debi and Gary Kennedy of So. Egremont, Mass., Geri and David Nix of Coventry, R.I., Hope and Dr. Guillermo Pena of Miami Lakes, Fla., and Maurice Jaquay, Jr. of Cumberland, R.I.; by great grandchildren: Peter Kennedy and wife Shelley, Adam Kennedy, Brian Kennedy and wife Magen, Steven Nix, Kelly Nix, Stephanie Jaquay, and Elizabeth, Daniel, Carrie, Nicholas, and Laura Pena; and by her great great granddaughter, Hannah Marie Kennedy. She is also survived by her brother, Alvin Thompson and his wife Viola of Syracuse, her daughter-in-law, Carol Jaquay of Rhode Island, and nieces and nephews. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, Lucius, in February of 2007; her son, Maurice Frank Jaquay; and her brother and sister, John Thompson and Ella Peabody.
Funeral services for Gertrude will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until the service at 1:30.
