Robert Smith


NORWICH – Robert C. Smith, 84, of Elm Street, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007 at his home.
Born March 22, 1923 in Norwich, Robert was the son of Claude E. and Aurelia (Cevasco) Smith. He knew but one residence, acquired by his grandparents, Louis and Rose Cevasco in 1908. The same property his parents and his aunt Evelyn Cevasco lived in.
Robert served for thirty-three months in the U.S. Army during World War II and later attended the Powelson Institute of Business under the GI Bill. His working career was with Victory Markets.
Robert served as the Residential Chairman of the Community Chest of Norwich, now United Way, during the 1960s and 1970s. He was devoted to the Catholic Church and served in various capacities for St. Paul’s Parish his entire life. His love for the catholic community and the greater Norwich area will continue to be expressed in many significant ways by his creation of the R.C. Smith Charitable Foundation.
During 2007, Robert was blessed by the visits and oversight of “Dottie,” his angel on earth and from the Chenango County Hospice and Palliative Care Agency. In lieu of flowers please consider gifts to this wonderful organization.
Robert is survived by his special friends, John Tiquin and Gary Clark and also his special care givers, Joan Anderson, Sheri Clapper, Penny Manwarren, Terri Maynard, Bev Meyers, Linda Slater, Leona Smith and Amy Casey and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his uncle, Angelo Cevasco as well as his aunt, Evelyn Cevasco.
A Mass of Resurrection for Robert will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Church with Rev. Douglas Cunningham celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. Marie Dykstra, pastoral care, will conduct prayer services at 5:30.
