Marie Barbarossa


NORWICH – Marie C. Barbarossa, 83, of Griffin Street, passed away on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 at her home.
Marie was born on Dec. 16, 1923 in Norwich. She was the daughter of Michael and Angela (Elia) Ocello. Marie graduated from Norwich High School in 1942 and then worked at Scintilla in Sidney until the end of World War II and subsequently at the Norwich Knitting Mill. On June 7, 1947 in St. Bartholomew’s Church, she married Ralph J. Barbarossa who died on June 6, 2005. After staying at home to raise her children, Marie returned to work at TACO in Sherburne during 1964 and remained there until her retirement in 1983.
A member of St. Bartholomew’s, Marie also enjoyed crochet, doing crossword puzzles and reading.
Surviving are four daughters and their husbands, Angela and Jim St. John of Atlanta, Ga., Michele and Bill Hansen, of Tallahassee, Fla., Debra and Roger Dorward of Norwich and Mary Jo Barbarossa of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren Steven St. John and his wife, Rebekah, of Winter Springs, Fla., Kevin St. John and his wife, Rebecca, of Madison, Wisc., Christopher Hansen of Atlanta, Ga., Susan Dorward of Albany and Christine Barnes and her husband, Robert of Norwich; and great grandchildren, Kathryn, and Julia St. John, of Winter Springs, Benjamin and Elizabeth St. John of Madison as well as Kaylee, Michael, Stephen, Mya and Jack Barnes of Norwich. She was predeceased by a sister, Josephine Benedicto and a brother, Frank Ocello.
Funeral services for Marie will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Burial will take place in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Contributions in memory of Marie may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Bartholomew’s Church or to Hospice of Chenango County.
