NORWICH - From helping children with homework to giving teenagers a place to grow and learn, The Place has supported local families for more than 40 years.
A recent $20,000 donation from Sidney Federal Credit Union (sfcu) will help support The Place's youth programs.
A sfcu spokesperson said the donation to was to "provide a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment for children and families in our community."
Sidney Federal Credit Union announced the donation as it launched an education-focused “Powering Potential” phase of its “Why sfcu? 1 Million Reasons” community support initiative.
“At sfcu, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and we're proud to support organizations that help make that possible,” the credit union stated.
The Place, also known as the Christian Neighborhood Center of Norwich, serves about 1,100 young people annually across Chenango County. It is located at 22 East Main Street in Norwich.
Executive Director Sharon Vesely said the organization offers child care, teen activities, parenting classes and family services.
Its programs give children opportunities to learn and make friends while helping families navigate everyday challenges, she said.

The organization also offers WhyTry, a free program that helps young people build confidence, develop problem-solving skills and form healthy relationships. A new 10-week session for ages 7 to 17 is scheduled to begin November 17.
