NORWICH - Improve Norwich Now will kick off its annual One Community, One Book literacy program with a community event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24, at Saturdays in the Park.
Featured author Suzanne Bloom, a McDonough resident, will read from her book “What About Bear?” and offer free, signed copies to the first 50 children.
Families can also take part in Bloom’s community art project, “It Takes a Village,” by creating, doodling and drawing clouds that will be displayed at Guernsey Memorial Library.
The popular scavenger hunt also returns. Participants can pick up a map at the kickoff, visit participating local businesses between Oct. 24 and Nov. 9 and collect 10 stickers. Completed maps can be returned to Guernsey Memorial Library, and Norwich students can also turn them in to their teacher at Stanford J. Gibson Primary School or Perry Browne Intermediate School. Every returned map will be entered in a drawing for raffle baskets.
New this year, alligators have appeared in West Park. Families can pick up an alligator scavenger hunt map at the Chenango County Historical Society booth, find all the alligators throughout the park and return the map to the booth for a special prize.
One Community, One Book is sponsored by Improve Norwich Now, Guernsey Memorial Library, the Chenango County Historical Society, Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Norwich City School District.
Participating businesses include Guernsey Memorial Library, the Chenango County Historical Society, CS Miller Books, the Norwich YMCA, Park Place, The Place, Norwich Copies Plus, Teasers, In Motion Designs, Deja Brew, The Paperback Book Exchange, the Balloon Bar, Seasons, A Novel Idea Book Boutique, Serenity Hobbies, Wally’s World ‘O Comics, South Broad Mercantile, Moi’s Center City Bistro and Nina’s.
