NORWICH – Five months after Chenango County relaunched a public transportation system, county officials are now considering a part-time transportation coordinator to help run busing routes more smoothly.

Much of the coordination of busing routes throughout the county is currently split between the Chenango County Clerk of the Board Sheri Howe and Cathay Express, the busing company contracted with the county.

While details of the new part-time position are still being worked out, Howe said it will ultimately improve services and help manage routes more efficiently.

“We don’t know yet what it’s going to look like,” Howe told members of the Chenango County Department of Public Works Committee during their July meeting. “We’re working with an employee there who already does some of this work.”

The position would be funded with 10 percent local share. Another 10 percent of the position’s salary would come from New York State, and the remaining 80 percent from the federal government.

The position will need approval from the Chenango County Board of Supervisors since the county’s share of the position’s salary affects the county budget.

The proposal is likely to go before the Board of Supervisors for approval on Monday.
