NEW BERLIN— The Unadilla Valley PONY league team looked for its first win of the summer season and it came in a big way against Schenevus at home on Monday. UV secured a 14-5 victory and a purple sky followed to celebrate.
Schenevus scored two runs in the top of the first while UV answered back with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Kasen Cox singled to lead off the inning, stole second, and scored on Teagin Eccleston’s RBI triple. Paul Ruffles had a big night at the plate, which started off with a double. Eccleston had scored prior to Ruffles’ double on a passed ball. Ruffles came in to score on a groundout RBI by Reed Osborne.
Schenevus scored another run in the top of the second to tie it at three but then UV fired up with seven runs in the bottom of the second. Jake Favinger hit an infield single, stole second, and scored on an error. After two straight walks, the bases were loaded for Eccleston, who walked to bring in a run. A wild pitch brought in another run before Ruffles doubled again, which drove in two runs.
The inning continued with Nick Crandall singling and Reed Osborne reaching on a walk. Ruffles scored on a wild pitch before three straight outs to make it 10-3 UV.
UV added on in the bottom of the fourth as Teagin Eccleston led the inning off with a single to center and scored on Ruffles’ RBI single. A wild pitch brought in another run before the second out.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Kasen Cox hit a ball deep to left field and made it all the way to home to have an inside-the-park home run.
In the sixth, both teams scored a run with UV getting a run on a wild pitch.
UV also made some great plays on defense with getting an out at third after reeling in a long ball in left and hitting the cutoff man who threw to third for the out. The defense also got a runner on second off the bag for the final out of the game.
Nick Crandall earned the win on the mound. He started and went three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.
Teagin Eccleston had a solid outing in relief, allowing just one earned run on one hit, two walks, and six strikeouts.
