UNADILLA - On Saturday, July 4 will be the capsule located on the Community House front lawn, Main Street and on Sunday, July 5 a capsule buried 50 years ago also in 1976 will be revealed at the Friends Church, 747 County Route 2 ( Rogers Hollow Road). Both events are free and area residents and many having moved away are coming for these celebrations.
Saturday will be a parade in Unadilla marching from the Unatego Elementary School to the Community House where there will be colonial games, demonstrations, photo booth (bring your own camera) with vintage clothing to slip on, slide show on the porch of Community House and more. Free Stewart’s Ice Cream and a food truck will be available.
The unearthing at noon will reveal the many memorabilia items placed in the 3000 pound vault with 24 Unadilla Elementary students who were named for the committee for this year’s planning, which indicated those still living closest to be a steering committee for the events to take place. Seventeen of these students will be attending with 84 deposits to be distributed to individuals, families, organizations and some presented to beneficiaries.
A new Tricentennial time capsule for 2076 is being organized by the Rotary Club of Unadilla. Anyone is invited to share in the future by contributing an item to be opened on July 4, 2076. Six- 4th grade students have been selected to serve on that committee. Items are to be placed in an envelope 10 x 13 and dropped off at The Green Giraffe, 179 Main Street by June 30 during business hours. The Unadilla Friends Church,747 County Route 2 (Rogers Hollow Road) will be opened on Sunday, July 5 at 1 p.m. Everyone is invited to a day of Community, history and celebration with a Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Free picnic at 11:30 a.m. at the Community House (located across from the Church). The Time Capsule reveal will be at 1 p.m. Lots of festivities beginning at 1:30 on the lawn featuring old time games, face painting, music, pinata and a free bike giveaway for one lucky child. Historic displays and demonstrations are also happening. A special event is the NY Wildlife Rescue Center show. Learn about local wildlife and the import work of the center in rescuing, rehabilitation and releasing birds of prey.
If you lived in the area in 1976, you are invited to bring photos for display. A Vintage clothing display will be by The Green Giraffe and a quilt made in 1976 by Otsego County Pomona Grange members.
A gathering of new memorabilia to be placed in the new capsule for 2076 will take place. You may bring items in an enveloped marked with name of donor/benefactor and brief description of item.
