NORWICH – On Saturday, June 20, Luszi's Legacy, a growing organization dedicated to “Saving Senior Paws,” is hosting it's first annual Corn hole Tournament at the Canasawacta Country Club in conjunction with 607 Shooters Cornhole League. Winners of the tournament will receive a cash prize. To register a two-person team is $60. All proceeds will go towards Luszi's Legacy's mission. You can sign up for the Luszi's Legacy Cornhole Tournament by direct messaging the organization's Facebook page or by texting (607) 244-3638. Registrations are accepted up to the day before the tournament, both beginners and advanced players are encouraged to participate.
The event on June 20 is open to the public and will be pet friendly, so you can bring along your furry friend to the excitement and get great photo opportunities. It is set to be held at the outdoor pavilion at the Cansawacta Country Club starting at noon.
Luszi's Legacy is a recently established charitable organization founded by Anett Slater in memory of her dog Luszi who lived to be nearly 17 years old. Slater was inspired to start the organization to support others with the higher vet bills of an aging pet. After the organization's inaugural fundraiser they were able to donate $4000 to a fund at Luszi's beloved veterinary office Pet Street Station in Norwich. Slater hopes that the success of their first event can expand through the first annual cornhole tournament so they can continue to help more pet families.
“This cornhole tournament would be a day that Luszi would've absolutely loved because she loved sunshine, she loved good grass, she loved running after anything that's flying. So this would have been a day for her for sure. Again we would not be able to do it without the community support. We appreciate everyone and all the support our cause has received,” said Slater.
Luszi, although a small Jack Russel Terrier, made a lasting impact on her owner and those that met them around town. She became friends with those at Nina's restaurant, and at Teaser's hair salon who would give her treats for saying hi on their walks.
In addition to the cornhole tournament, there will be live music by Dano (Dan Wakefield), Nina's Food Truck, a variety of vendors, and a cash bar.
“Nina's window was one of Luzi's favorite place to stop by for a treat, so it's special to have them there for this event,” said Slater.
Attendees not actively participating in the cornhole tournament can expect to find tasty treats, entertainment, and good company. Slater explained that there will be the food truck for meals along with locally made sweet treats from Tasteful Temptations by Kimmie, and even some dog-related vendors with treats and items for the furry friends in attendance. Luszi's Legacy will be selling merchandise with their logo including, t-shirts, bandanas, candles, and beer coozies locally sourced from the Trophy Guy. Of course, all proceeds go towards the Luszi's Legacy fund.
If it rains, everything will be moved under the pavilion, so rain or shine this event will take place.
The 607 Shooters Cornhole League is helping to sponsor the tournament. They will be running the brackets and bringing supplies for Luszi's Legacy. More teams are needed for a well-rounded tournament so consider registering with a partner. There will be both a beginners and advanced league, with the winners of each to receive cash prizes.
“I just really hope that we get a lot of people to come and keep doing these great things. The community really came together for our first event and I'm just hoping the same for this one,” said Slater.
