NORWICH— The Northeastern Nationals three team demolition derby is being held this weekend, May 2 and May 3, at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. The event is being run by the Rifanburg Racing Promotions, who also runs the derby during the fair season.

Tristan Rifanburg, Norwich alum, said he arranged this event in May over just the fair in August to promote the demolition derby sport more and avoid any event conflicts.

“There are so many other events to compete with during the summer,” Rifanburg said. “This is like a kick off of the season.”

Rifanburg also said that there will be lots of food at the event, including food from the Polkville store, Nina’s, the Tavern, French Fry trucks, a Chicken BBQ truck, and a coffee truck.

This event features 250 cars from all different classes, who all pre-registered. The total purse payout for this derby, Rifanburg said, is $40,000 plus.

The event will start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 while starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

To top it all off, the event will also have a 50/50 both days in honor of Bringing Kellen Home! Norwich seventh grader Kellen Downey is currently recovering from Brain surgery and in order to come home, his home must be renovated to be fully wheelchair accessible. The proceeds from the 50/50 raffle will go towards Kellen’s mission to come home and for any other medical and travel expenses.

General admission, which includes parking and grand-stand access is $20 per person, per day.

A pit-pass, in addition to the general admission cost is $20/person/day= $40/person/day.

An All-access weekend pass, which includes parking, grandstand admission, and pit-pass access for the entire weekend, is $60 per person. Kids under five get in free and you must be 16 years or older to enter the pits.

Good luck to all drivers and enjoy the show.
