NORWICH - A Town of Oxford man faces multiple felony charges following an investigation into a stolen trailer and snowmobiles reported earlier this year in the Town of Norwich, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the investigation began Feb. 6 after deputies received a larceny complaint reporting a stolen 24-foot enclosed trailer containing three snowmobiles.

On Feb. 9, the sheriff’s office received a tip regarding the possible location of the stolen snowmobiles. Members of the Road Patrol Division and Detective Division responded to a property in the Town of Norwich, where they located two of the stolen snowmobiles that had been concealed from plain view. Investigators later located the stolen trailer at a separate location in the Town of Oxford.

Detectives identified Robert M. Demuth, 45, of Oxford, as a suspect during the investigation.

On Feb. 24, Demuth was taken into custody on a charge of 4th-degree criminal mischief following a domestic dispute in the Town of Oxford. While in custody, investigators questioned him regarding the stolen trailer and snowmobiles as well as several other larceny investigations.

Following the investigation, Demuth was charged in connection with the Feb. 6 Town of Norwich case with 3rd-degree grand larceny, a Class D felony; 3rd-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a Class D felony; and 5th-degree conspiracy, a Class A misdemeanor.

Demuth was processed on the charges and arraigned through centralized arraignment. He was released on his own recognizance in accordance with New York state bail reform laws and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Greene Court and the Town of Norwich Court at later dates.
