Norwich’s Oliver Wins The 500 Free; Norwich Takes Third Overall At Sectionals

ENDWELL— The Norwich Purple Tornado boys’ swim team competed in the Section IV, Class B championship held Wednesday, February 11 for the prelims, and Saturday, February 14th for the finals.

Norwich took third overall, behind leader’s Maine-Endwell (639 pts) and Oneonta’s 250 points, with 240 points.

“We only lost second by 10 points and it came down to Oneonta having three scoring breaststrokers to our one,” Coach Gantt said.

Coach Gantt shared that the Norwich Purple Tornado boys’ swim team has not placed this high in well over a decade and a half. Congratulations!

She also added that several boys moved up a spot from their seed in order to contribute to the team’s third place finish, including Timmy in the Individual Medley, Sebastian in the 50 and 100 free, Shalom in the 100 free, Alex Beiu in the 500 free, and Sharon in the 100 breast.

Amon Oliver became a 2025-26 sectional champion as he won the 500 yard free with a time of 5:14.19.

However, the time did not qualify for states.

Nate Shtrauch came in seventh place in the same event with a time of 5:34.07 as Alexandru Beiu finished 13th with a time of 6:42.48.

Oliver also swam in the 200 free and took third with a time of 1:56.75.

Coach Gantt was also amazed by her relay teams.

“They swam out of their minds! It was so much fun,” she said.

As a team, Norwich came in second in the 400 yard relay with a team of Amon Oliver, Alex Moutarde, Timothy Guzewich, and Nate Shtrauch with a time of 3:36.14, behind M-E’s 3:12.94.

Norwich took third in the 200 yard free relay with a team of Sebastian Kenyon, Alex Moutarde, Amon Oliver, and Nate Shtrauch, finishing in a time of 1:38.74.

Norwich came in sixth in the 200 yard medley relay with a team of Timothy Guzewich, Sharon Thinagaran, Shalom Thinagaran, and Sebastian Kenyon, coming in with a time of 2:02.10.

Timothy Guzewich came in fourth place in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.60 with teammate Sharon Thinagaran in 11th with a time of 3:12.19.

Guzewich also achieved a fourth place finish in the 100 yard back with a time of 1:01.40 while Benjamin Collins finished 15th with a time of 1:22.84.

Alex Moutarde earned a fourth place finish in the 50 yard free with a time of 23.89 seconds as Sebastian Kenyon finished 12th with a time of 25.62 seconds.

Moutarde also finished fourth in the 100 yard free with a time of 52.86 seconds.

Nate Shtrauch took fifth in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 59.05 seconds.

Kenyon and Shalom Thinagaran both swam in the 100 yard free, where Kenyon finished 11th with a time of 59.98 seconds and Thinagaran came in 15th place with a time of 1:01.99.

Sharon Thinagaran finished 16th in the 100 yard breast with a time of 1:23.25.
