CHENANGO COUNTY - When animal shelters become overcrowded or take in animals who need extra care foster homes can mean the difference between stress and safety, or even life and death. While many people assume fostering is complicated for requires special training, Chenango SPCA has a much simpler process.

The fostering process starts with an application found on their website, chenangospca.org, which helps the SPCA match pets with suitable homes. Applicants are asked about their home, veterinarian, current pets and children. After an application is approved, orientation or training is provided to explain expectations, safety guidelines and support.

Fostering can last anywhere from a few days to several months, depending on the animals’ needs. Chenango SPCA works closely with foster families to set expectations and accommodate schedules.

Fostering saves lives as each foster home opens space in a shelter for another animal in need. During peak season or emergency situations, foster networks are essential.

Story Continues Below Adverts

For those unable to foster, volunteering at the shelter is another great way to help. Volunteers assist with daily tasks that improve animals’ quality of life and support shelter staff.

One of the most visible volunteer roles is dog walking. Regular walks provide dogs with exercise, stimulation and relief from kennel stress. Volunteers can also help with basic house cleaning, playtime and socialization.

Whether fostering or volunteering, emotional bonds are common. Letting go can be difficult, but many caregivers say the reward comes from seeing animals gain confidence and move on to permanent homes. Every foster and volunteer plays a vital role in preparing animals for adoption by helping them learn routines, trust people and experience normal life.
