NORWICH — The Norwich Family YMCA celebrated a historic milestone Tuesday night, marking its 138th annual dinner, celebrated at the Canasawacta Country Club, and the 25th anniversary of the opening of its current facility in 2002.

Altogether, the Norwich Family YMCA has been a treasure in the local community for 163 years. The event served as both a reflection on a quarter-century in the modern facility and a tribute to the dedicated individuals and institutions that have anchored the organization since its inception.

The evening was highlighted by the induction of the 17th class of "Hero Award" winners, recognizing those whose service has been vital to the YMCA’s mission.

The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Robert "Mickey" James, who became just the sixth person in the organization's history to receive the honor. James was celebrated for his extraordinary 70-year commitment to the YMCA, specifically his leadership as Chairman of the Annual Campaign, which has been instrumental in the organization’s growth.

Equally central to the evening was the recognition of NBT Bank as a premier Community Partner. With roots in Norwich dating back to 1856—preceding even the YMCA itself—NBT Bank was honored for its deep-seated commitment to the region. Officials noted that the bank has served as a key sponsor for every YMCA event, providing a foundation of corporate support that has spanned generations.

In a significant announcement, YMCA leadership revealed that the Open Door Campaign has far exceeded its expectations. Launched with a goal of $163,000 to honor the YMCA’s 163rd year in Norwich, the campaign reached $199,548 as of January 27. Contributions are still being accepted as the community continues to rally behind the cause.
