ALBANY - New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo announced this week that legislation he cosponsors that would provide significant tax relief to certain veterans in the state has been signed into law by the governor.
The legislation (S.1183/A.74) establishes a complete real property tax exemption for the primary residence of a qualifying veteran with a 100% service-connected disability, where property is owned by the veteran and his or her spouse. A county, city, town, village or school district would be authorized to adopt a local law or resolution to opt in to the tax exemption.
The bill takes effect immediately and shall apply to assessment rolls prepared after Jan. 2, 2026.
“I am pleased that the governor has signed this bill into law,” Sen. Griffo said. "This tax exemption has the potential to greatly help many disabled veterans and their families and increase their quality of life. It is one way that we can show our gratitude to the veterans who sacrificed so much while in service to our country."
