SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Rotary Club will hold their second annual tree lighting on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the United Church of Christ.
Last year, organizers began the tradition, hoping to have at least 20 people attend the inaugural event. Close to 100 people turned out in the first year.
This year, the celebration will continue with the singing of Christmas carols and the tree lighting celebration.
Sherburne’s holiday festivities will continue the following weekend.
On Saturday, December 13 Sherburne’s Christmas Parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Local Line Bargain Bins & Discount Warehouse before traveling down Main Street and ending at The Sherburne Fire Department. Rotary President Deanna Weaver said this year members of the local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops will join the Sherburne American Legion, the fire department and the Sherburne-Earlville Transportation department to escort Santa Claus through town for his arrival at the Fire Station.
At 1:00 p.m. the Christmas festivities at the Sherburne Fire Department will continue. The Rotary has partnered with the Sherburne American Legion for the second year in a row to provide family fun and entertainment. “Our goal is to get the community to come together,” Weaver said.
At the fire house, the Boy Scouts will have a table set up to take food donations for the area food pantry. Everyone who donates will be entered into a drawing for a free remote-controlled car, donated by a local business. The Girl Scouts will hold a bake sale and all proceeds from that event will also go to the food pantry.
Children who attend the event will receive free coloring books and crayons and a coupon that will allow them to be entered into a drawing for a free bike, donated by the United Church of Christ.
The Sherburne-Earlville Teacher’s Association will be giving away free books to children who attend. In addition, there will be face-painting, balloon animals, cocoa and cookies and yogurt provided by Chobani. Children will also have the chance to make Christmas cards that will be sent to veterans at the New York State Veteran’s Home in Oxford.
According to Weaver, the Sherburne Rotary, Sherburne Legion and United Church of Christ sponsor this event in order to bring the community together to celebrate the holidays.
