NORWICH —The Norwich Purple Tornado boys’ soccer team isn’t finished yet. After thinking the season ended with a win against Johnson City on October 14, the boys found out they still had a shot at glory.
Since they pulled off an upset against Owego and defeated Johnson City and Waverly, Norwich earned a spot in the Section IV, Class A tournament and advanced straight to the sectional championship game—a first in many years for the boys’ soccer program, which has never won a title.
The news was especially thrilling for first-time head coach Michael Oberg and the team’s seniors.
“The boys have been very excited the last couple of weeks at practice about this championship game,” Norwich coach Mike Oberg said. “The team has grown all season long. I actually had more time for practice for this one game than before the beginning of the season. We, along with our booster club, also hope that the community comes out to show support to send the boys off with Purple Tornado pride and spirit before our bus leaves at noon.”
Norwich faces off against Maine-Endwell at Chenango Valley High School on Saturday at 2 p.m. Admission will be charged through GOFAN digital ticketing. Good luck, Norwich.
