NORWICH — The Chenango County Area Agency on Aging is partnering with the community to bring holiday cheer to seniors, hosting its third annual “Giving Tree” event.
From now until December 17, donations and gifts can be dropped at the agency office giving tree location, in the Chenango County Building, at 5 Court Street, Norwich.
Area Agency on Aging of Chenango County Executive Director Heather Collier said there are several ways to participate in the program.
“Gifts can be dropped off at the agency office by December 17,” Collier said. “Please place your gifts in a gift bag and leave them unwrapped.”
“If you prefer to make a monetary contribution, mail it in or bring it to our office with a note labeled “Giving Tree,” she said. “You can also reserve a specific senior name by calling 607-337-1781, or email Rebecca Weeks at rweeks@chenangocountyny.gov. The agency staff will complete the shopping for you.”
Collier noted seniors can also be can nominated into the program and added to the giving tree list.
“To add a senior to our list, email or call us with the nominees name, address and phone number,” she continued. “What a surprise that would be to gift an elderly not even expecting it.”
Collier said last year, the community “Giving Tree” was outstanding and she hopes the same can be achieved this year, as many older adults in the county live miles from town and do not have access to necessities.
“We’re a very rural community and sometimes people are off the map,” she added. “Last year, we drove around and brought hot chocolate to a few seniors and just sat and talked. Giving your time is always a nice gift.”
A list of gift ideas include: house slippers, stationary, non-slip socks with grips, flashlights and batteries, kitchen utensils, dish towels, cloths, potholders, travel size hand lotions, hats, scarves, mittens, candy, pet food, treats, cat litter, toys, lip balm, bed pillow and case, warm blanket or throw, shampoo, hair brush, comb, robes, large print puzzle books, hot chocolate, tea, mugs, and toiletries.
Collier said gifts turned in after deadline may not be delivered until after Christmas.
