SIDNEY– After the Bainbridge-Guilford girls’ soccer team defeated Delhi to advance to the league title game, all eyes were on the nightly matchup between Sidney and Oxford. Both teams battled through regulation and the first overtime period, but were still scoreless.
Oxford struck the game-winner off a free kick by Paige Rickard in the second period of overtime to advance to its second consecutive MAC league championship game. Oxford is hoping to win it all this time around after falling to Unatego last year.
“Our coaching staff continues to be impressed with the team's overall performance. The girls played consistently from start to finish, demonstrating their determination and grit. They played with remarkable intensity, ultimately resulting in a goal. Sidney was a tough opponent, and their strong play pushed us to perform better,” Oxford's Coach Rachel Seiler said. “Colette Kappauf's defensive marking was outstanding, and the rest of the defense provided excellent support by stepping up to double team and forcing Sidney to lose possession. The midfielders showed great endurance, and both the midfielders and forwards created several excellent scoring chances. We hope to carry this momentum into the MAC championship game.”
It will be a local Chenango County matchup between B-G and Oxford for the title on Saturday afternoon at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta, scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
