MEXICO – Sherburne-Earlville didn’t execute on special teams early in the game, and it cost the Timberwolves dearly.
Mexico’s Carter Robert returned two punts for a touchdown in the opening quarter. Those devastating blows had S-E on its heels the rest of the way in a 63-12 road defeat to the Tigers on Friday night.
“We saw (what Robert) could do,” said Timberwolves head coach Steve Franklin. “All week long we were kicking it 30 to 35 yards out of bounds. We did not want to kick it to him. We just made a couple of special teams mistakes.”
That early start for Mexico paved the way for an explosive second quarter that yielded five touchdowns.
Tigers quarterback, Brayden Mack, had a monster second quarter accounting for all five touchdowns. He scored on three TD rushes and also tossed a pair of scoring passes.
Mack figured in all seven of Mexico’s touchdowns rushing for five and throwing for two. Franklin said Mack is headed to the University of Albany this coming year on a division one baseball scholarship.
Mack finished with 155 yards rushing on 10 carries to lead all performers on offense.
“This is the second week in a row we faced a quarterback that will play division one sports next year,” Franklin said.
Sherburne-Earlville backup quarterback, Jordan Palmer, tossed a pair of scoring tosses to Lukas Schieferstein, each one going for more than 50 yards.
Palmer was called into duty, when, starter Hadden Price was pulled from the game after three snaps due to an ankle injury.
“We’re a pretty banged up football team right now,” Franklin said.
Sherburne-Earlville (0-4) plays at Weedsport this coming Friday.
