NORWICH - A Sherburne man has been arrested on a sealed grand jury indictment charging him with multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff's office said Wayne H. Viera, 45, was taken into custody Friday after the indictment accused him of raping a juvenile female victim.

Viera, a registered sex offender in New York, faces two counts of first-degree rape, a Class B felony; one count of second-degree rape, a Class D felony; and two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, also Class D felonies, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was arraigned in Chenango County Court and sent to the county jail on bail set at $85,000 cash.

Authorities said the investigation is continuing and no further information was released due to the age of the victim. All defendant are presumed innocent of the charges unless convicted in a court of law.
