NORWICH — The Chenango Arts Council and Guernsey Memorial Library have partnered to offer Halloween movies every Wednesday in October at 7 p.m.
The movies are free and open to the public, and will be held in the Martin W. Kappel Theater at the Chenango Arts Council, located at 27 West Main Street in Norwich.
"This year we are celebrating Vincent Price movies, because he did a lot of fun, old movies. So we thought we’d spotlight him," said Chenango Arts Council Administrative Assistant Mary Beth Miller.
This year's movie series will be featuring horror films starring actor Vincent Price. Known for his smooth and distinctive voice and terrifying laugh, Price has starred in a number of horror movies, usually playing the role of a villain.
The free movie series will kick off on October 1 with a showing of "The Bat," a 1959 film about a killer hunting in a small town.
On October 8, "House of Wax" will be screened. This 1953 film stars Price as a wax sculptor named Henry, who learns his business partner plans to set fire to their wax museum to collect the insurance payout. Henry begins a new wax museum, but all is not as it seems within its walls.
"The Comedy of Terrors" from 1963 will be shown on October 15. Price stars as Waldo Trumbull, an amoral undertaker who takes to murder as a way to fund his drinking habit. Desperate for more money, Trumbull and his assistant attempt to kill their landlord Mr. Black, but discover he continues to recover from death each time they do him in.
On October 22, science fiction horror classic "The Fly" will be screened. In this 1986 movie, Scientist Seth Brundle, played by Jeff Goldblum, builds a teleportation device and decides to test it on himself. However, a housefly slips in to the machine, causing a merge between the scientist and the insect. As the fly's cells start to take over his body, Brundle transforms into a horrifying monster.
Lastly, "House on Haunted Hill" will be shown on October 29. The 1959 supernatural horror flick features Price as a rich oddball who invites five guests to his supposedly haunted mansion. His challenge is for the guests to survive a night of scares to earn $10,000 each. Unbeknownst to Price's character Frederick Loren, his estranged wife plans to frighten his associate into shooting the millionaire.
Miller said the movies should be suitable for all ages. Additionally, free popcorn will be provided, as well as some fun trivia about old Hollywood.
"They should be pretty suitable for all ages, especially since they’re older movies. So it should be a good time," she said. "We’ve put in some trivia about old Hollywood and the making of movies and things like that in the program, so that’s fun too."
