NORWICH — A Public Hearing titled, “ Imposing additional Mortgage Recording Tax” is scheduled for 10:40 a.m., October 14, inside the Supervisor's Chambers, located in the County Office Building, at 5 Court Street, Norwich.

Chenango County Clerk Brian Wessels said this hearing is not about putting additional tax on top of what was imposed last year, but extends it for another two tax cycles. The mortgage tax will remain at one percent and is solely imposed on a mortgage on real property he said.

He explained the reason for the hearing is for the public to have an opportunity to comment on the tax continuation for two years, authorized by statute, and noted legislation authorizing the additional mortgage tax is typically on a two-year basis.
