NORWICH — With students heading back to school soon, the City Church Norwich is holding a celebratory event for the community, offering free backpacks filled with school supplies, and inviting all to enjoy fun family activities and food.

The free event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, August 30, at 97 Silver Street, located at the City Church Norwich.

During the event, there will be carnival games and prizes, face painting, bounce houses, music and more.

Backpacks will be handed out at 2:30 p.m. to students in grades 12 and under, on a first come, first serve basis. Students must be present to receive a backpack.

City Church Norwich Campus Pastor Zach Thorp said the church launched the annual backpack giveaway four years ago as a part of “FamJam”, a free family outreach event for the community.

“This year, we've taken a new approach, but our mission remains the same,” Thorp said.

Thorp explained they used to have one event through the year but this year they focused more on the Vacation Bible Experience (VBX), to be intentional with discipleship.

“So, instead of doing one large event during “FamJam”, we split the event up,” said Thorp. “At VBX, we finished with a family fun celebration, and the backpack giveaway is now its own event.”

He said when they started giving out backpacks, they gave about 100 away and over the years the numbers have grown.

“This year we're excited to give out 200 backpacks,” he said. “Every bag is more than just supplies, it is a reminder that someone cares.”

Thorp is thankful for all that have given and donated to this outreach and said the generosity from many has made this possible. He gave a shout out to their incredible Dream Team who continue to be faithful with their use of gifts and talents in building God’s Kingdom.

“We couldn't do it without you,” said Thorp. “We are truly grateful for you.”

Thorp reflected on his early years in school and said he took note of the hardship his mom went through to purchase his school supply needs. This continues to inspire his giving and care for others.

“Growing up, I remember how my mom made sacrifices to ensure I had everything I needed to start the school year off right,” he said.

“That memory inspires what we do today,” Thorp added.

He noted the church is called to share the love of Jesus with everyone and providing free backpacks is one way they meet the tangible need of the community.

Starting on September 7, there will be two services, one at 9 a.m. and the second service at 11 a.m. Thorp invites all to visit and find a home with the City Church Norwich.
