NORWICH - A Plymouth woman has been arrested in connection with a bomb threat earlier this month that forced the evacuation of three businesses in the Town of Norwich, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities said Thendara L. Hartwell, 51, was taken into custody at her home without incident on Mondy, Aug. 13 following an investigation into a threat made on Aug. 5, directed at Community Bank on State Highway 23. The building also houses a Mirabito gas station and a Dunkin’, all of which were evacuated after the threat was received around 1 p.m. through a call from a blocked phone number, said police.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies, assisted by New York State Troopers, secured the scene while a NY State Police explosives detection canine team and bomb technician conducted a complete search of the premises. No explosives were found, and the businesses reopened at about 4 p.m.
According to investigators, a search warrant was executed during the investigation, and evidence determined Hartwell was responsible for making the threatening call, which authorities say caused public alarm, financial damage, and inconvenience. She was charged with making a terroristic threat, a class D felony, and falsely reporting an incident, a class E felony.
Hartwell was arraigned in centralized arraignment court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,250 bail. The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent of the charges unless proven guilty in a court of law.
