NORWICH – It was a rainy first round of the 67th annual Canasawacta Country Club member-guest tournament on Thursday. The morning golfers were stopped for an hour due to a heavy downpour, where some holes were unplayable until the crew squeegeed them. At 11 a.m., play resumed and the afternoon pairings went on around 2:30 p.m. and finished around 7:30 p.m.

The crew, who really stepped up when needed to, were praised by head professional PJ Brunick, who served in his first year as tournament director, where he was having so much fun.

“The pro shop staff were like a “Nascar pit crew” out there,” Brunick said. “They were like animals, making sure all the carts were cleaned quickly. They had 50 carts done in 10 minutes in between the morning and afternoon.”

Despite the wetness of the course in the morning, there were a total of seven under-par scores, which the course is a par-71, compared to two in the afternoon. Some golfers in the afternoon session said that the greens were a bit slower because of all the rain.

Brevin Bennett and his uncle Justin Bennett are leading the tournament by four strokes with the lowest score of a 63 after the first round. Brevin, an eighth grader, is playing in his second member-guest tournament.
