SHERBURNE – Police investigators say they have a person of interest in a fatal hit and run that occurred in the Town of Sherburne earlier this month, but have yet to call that person a “suspect” in the case.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has been handling the investigation of an incident that left 59-year-old Jeffery Maxson dead on the side of State Highway 80, near Rogers Conservation Center, on the evening of July 4.

The agency has now conducted six different search warrants on phones, locations, and other points to help in the case. Detectives have requested cell phone information from phone companies to be turned over for investigation and is currently waiting for a return of data.

“We’re deep in it,” said Detective-Sergeant Chad O’Hara. “We’re continuing to work on it to gather as much evidence as possible to see where that leads us. We want to do everything we can to make the family happy and figure out what happened that day.”

“I’m hoping that within a month, we can have some better answers,” he said.

The investigation has been ongoing for nearly three weeks. Deputies were called to the area on State Highway 80 on July 5 for reports of an unresponsive male off the shoulder of the road. The sheriff’s office believes that on July 4, at approximately 8:40 p.m., Maxson was walking west bound when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling east and continued eastward after hitting Maxson.
