NORWICH – The Norwich Post 189 Legion ball team played two games over the holiday with one game against George F. Riordan Post 974 on Thursday and a game against Binghamton Post 1645 on Saturday.
Game 1: Norwich 7 - George F. 6
George F. Riordan took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first at Whitney Point High School. Norwich flipped the game in the top of the second with three runs to go up by one. Braden Reid singled to lead off the inning before Gavin Brown was hit by the pitch and Kassen Stubb walked to load the bases with no outs.
An error drove in one run before Brown scored on a wild pitch and Stubb on an error before the second out.
George F. Riordan tied the game at three in the bottom of the third and scored two go-ahead runs in the fourth. Norwich tied the game back up at five all in the top of the fifth and scored two in the sixth, which one was the game-winner. Norwich held George F to just one run in the seventh to hold on to the win.
Michael Brunick led Norwich with three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs to help the team pick up its first win of the summer season. Owen Olds had a hit and an RBI as Jackson Sastri, Zac Turner, Gavin Brown, Braden Reid, and Kassen Stubb all added hits. Kolbey Redenback walked three times.
Stubb got the start on the mound, going four and a third innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits, two walks, and struck out three batters. Sastri worked 2.2 in relief, allowing just the one additional run on two hits, and had one strikeout.
Game 2: Binghamton 10 - Norwich 3
After being down 7-0 through three innings, Norwich got on the board in the fourth with three runs. Binghamton added on with three in the sixth. Kassen Stubb led off the fourth inning with a single to left on the first pitch before stealing second. Gavin Brown reached base on a catcher’s interference and Colin Olds singled to center to load the bases with one out.
Jackson Sastri drove in a run with a single to right field, which reloaded the bases. Brown scored on a groundout RBI by Kolbey Redenback as an error brought in Olds. Sastri, Redenback, Stubb, Colin Olds, and Braden Reid all had hits in the loss.
Reid worked five innings, allowing seven runs (one earned) on three hits, four walks, and struck out six batters. Michael Brunick worked an inning of relief, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits, one walk, and had one strikeout.
Norwich Post 189 (1-6) hosts Binghamton this evening at 6 p.m. to wrap up the series.
