CHENANGO COUNTY — Monday weather conditions improved from Sunday, following a recent storm that left damage throughout Chenango County.
Area river and creek waters on Monday paled to the raging waters of Sunday, that flooded some homes and a number of roads.
The storm quickly came into the area at around 4:30 a.m., with excessive rain, wind and lightening that continued well after sunrise. Some residents in the neighboring counties and in the northern part of Chenango County received tornado and flash flood warnings between 4:30 and 5 a.m.
In Norwich and Sherburne, roads became covered in flood water, rising up to the sidewalks in certain places and filling the basements of many homes. Trees blocked roadways and some area residents were caught off guard as drivers and passengers were stranded in their vehicles.
Emergency calls poured into the Chenango County 911 Dispatch Center all morning.
At about 10 a.m., the City of Norwich Mayor Brian Doliver shared a declaration of the City of Norwich State of Emergency.
The emergency notice stated public safety was threatened as hazardous road conditions were throughout the city.
Restrictions were placed on travel and all departments and agencies of the City of Norwich were directed to take whatever steps necessary to protect life and property.
