SHERBURNE – The Norwich PONY team traveled to neighboring Sherburne on Thursday night, where they came home with a close 9-6 victory. The game was tied at six, going into the sixth inning, where Norwich scored its three runs and held on.

Both teams got on the board early in the first, where Norwich had a 4-3 lead and was able to add on to make it 6-3 after the first two innings.

Norwich saw three consecutive hits to get the game started from Bo Brown, James Sprague, and Joey Parker. Bo Brown scored on the error following Parker’s single. Brayden Lawrence had a one-out, two-run single before an error brought in another run.

S-E answered back in the bottom of the third with a lead-off single from Colin Pudney before rallying on two outs. Pudney, who stole second, hustled in to score on Parker McCracken’s infield single. Lucas Martinez also had an infield single, where McCracken scored on an error and Martinez, with great base running, stole third and scored on an error.

Norwich’s Blayne Sutton brought in two with a one-out single to left field in the top of the second inning.

Sherburne held Norwich in the third and fourth innings to tie up the game at six all.

Pudney led the third inning off with a walk before stealing both second and third and scored on a groundout RBI from Jay Tackabury.

Martinez reached on an error to start the fourth and came in to score on a groundout RBI from Deagan Knochenmus. A wild pitch brought in the tying run.

The game remained tied at six until the top of the sixth inning. Brayden Lawrence came up big again with a two-run single to right field and Pierce Sherman, who reached base on a fielder’s choice, scored on a passed ball before the final out.

Sherburne had opportunities to score in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Nolan Sigman doubled on a long ball to right field with two outs and Knochenmus walked, but Sherburne failed to score.

The Sherburne defense turned a double play in the top of the seventh with a line out and picked off the runner, who left first base. Jack Bohnert led the bottom of the seventh inning off with a single to right field and stole second but Sherburne could not score.

Norwich’s Brayden Lawrence led the team with two hits and a team-high four RBIs while Bo Brown had a team-high four hits on the night. Blayne Sutton drove in two runs while Luke Waters had an RBI.

Joey Parker got the start for Norwich on the mound, where he went 3.2 innings. He allowed six runs (three earned) on three hits, three walks, and struck out two batters.

Brayden Lawrence earned the win in relief, going the final 3.1 innings. He allowed just two hits, a walk, and had two strikeouts.

Sherburne saw one hit each from Pudney, McCracken, Martinez, Sigman, and Bohnert, while Tackabury, McCracken, Martinez, and Knochenmus each drove in one run.

Lucas Newman started for Sherburne, where he went four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits, four walks, and struck out six batters. Chance Beeman allowed two earned runs on no hits, three walks, and had two strikeouts in an inning in relief. Deagan Knochenmus, entered in the top of the sixth with no outs, allowing one unearned run on two hits, and struck out three batters.

Norwich (2-0) hosts Unatego on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. . Sherburne (1-2) heads to Edmeston on Monday at 6 p.m.
