MIDDLETOWN – The 2025 NYSPHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships were held over the weekend, featuring local Chenango County athletes, where Norwich’s Gabe Decker brought home a state championship. Full results can be found on ny.milesplit.com.
Norwich’s Gabe Decker had an outstanding finish to his senior year as he came away a state champion in the boys’ 400 meter hurdles with a best time of 53.90 seconds. Congratulations, Gabe!
“Gabe’s track career had its ups and downs but he stayed focused throughout,” Norwich coach Shaun Horan said. “ He had a few injuries that really set him back in previous seasons but this year, he was able to stay healthy and get in a lot of really high quality workouts. He went to the states meet with a great attitude and executed his race strategy perfectly.”
Decker qualified for the Federation finals as the number two seed, where he finished third with a time of 54.83, and has also qualified for the New Balance National Championships in Philadelphia, which runs from June 19 to the 22.
Oxford junior Keegan Waltz, who became a sectional champion in the boys’ 400 meter dash, came in sixth at states with a time of 49.39 seconds.
Harpursville/Afton freshman Appalonia Bushaw qualified for states after winning the Section IV, Class B in the long jump and then took second at state qualifiers. She finished sixth in the Class C and 19th overall in the long jump finals with a jump of 18 feet.
Bainbridge-Guilford freshman Maddie Ingham joined in on the fun as she competed in the 800 meter run, where she finished 42nd of 50 girls with a time of 2:23.54.
The UV girls’ 4x800 meter relay team of Addison Marinelli, Madison Dix, Molly Gorrell, and Natalya Schrag had a great season to make states, where the girls finished 44th out of 46 teams with a time of 10:36.32.
