NORWICH – On Sunday morning, the Norwich Police Department (NPD) entered into a standoff with a 24-year-old Norwich man, who allegedly made comments about shooting police and taking his own life.
Norwich Police Chief Reuben Roach said the incident may have been mental health related and began as a domestic dispute, and the man fled towards Flanagan Field, a public park in Norwich. The man made the threats via text message that were later reported to authorities.
Multiple officers from the NPD, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to the area. Concerned there may be a weapon reportedly involved, Roach said police took precautions. No weapon was found and no injuries reported, said Roach.
