OXFORD — The weather may be a little warmer than usual, but winter isn’t over yet, so what better time is there to grab a few additional warm winter clothes at the two dollar bag sale, happening now, at Common Cents Thrift Shop.

The two dollar bag sale thrift shop hours and dates are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 located at 64 North Canal Street in the Village of Oxford.

Manager and volunteer Mel George said, “The Common Cents Thrift shop is a not-for-profit establishment and the proceeds from sales go to the Oxford Food Pantry and McDonough Food Pantry.

“All people who work here are volunteers and we’re always looking for additional volunteers,” said Mel. “If you have donations, call first to schedule because sometimes we aren’t in the shop, but if you call, we can schedule you in. The number to call to schedule an appointment or to become a volunteer is 607-843-6512.

She said the two dollar bag sale includes all winter clothing for women, men, children and infants. Hats, boots, mittens, jackets, sweaters, and gloves are available.

“Men’s jeans are excluded as we hardly ever have enough in stock,” she added.

“With the sales made in the thrift shop, we pay both food pantries monthly, and also support schools and provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets,” said Mel. “The funds go to the whole community. We help out fire victims, the homeless, and anyone else that is in need. If we have something to donate, we help out.”

She said, “It’s very rewarding to see people that are happy and satisfied with what we’re doing and what we can supply for them,” she said. “Come and check us out.”

For nearly four decades the Common Cents Thrift Shop has continued to provide revenue for the Oxford and McDonough Food Pantries. The thrift shop was previously known as the Community Clothes Closet and has moved a few times since its inception in 1983.

The shop is closed Monday and Wednesday and does not take donations on those days.

To donate gently used clothing/merchandise, call the shop 607-843-6512 to schedule an appointment.
