Local Soccer Teams Preparing For Sectionals

CHENANGO COUNTY – After finishing strong in the regular season, local Chenango County soccer teams are preparing for Sectionals. Below is the schedule announced by Section IV.

Boys Soccer:

Afton/Harpursville, Bainbridge-Guilford, and Greene will be respectively representing Chenango County, where they all sit in Section IV, Class C. There’s a possibility these teams could face off against each other later on in the brackets, which can be found on the Section IV athletics website.

A/H:

The Afton/Harpursville Crimson Knights concluded a successful 2023 regular season with a 13-1-1 record and will be playing in the MAC championship on Saturday against division I leader Bainbridge-Guilford. The two teams met recently where the Crimson Knights won 5-1.

Afton/Harpursville is currently a four seed and will host MAC Division I’s Delhi on Tuesday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m. Delhi defeated the Crimson Knights 1-0 on September 22.

B-G:

The Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats finished its 2023 season as the leading team in the MAC’s division I with a 6-5-1 record. B-G will face Afton/Harpursville in the MAC championship on Saturday in Oneonta. The Bobcats, listed as an 11 seed, will face a tough Untaego/Franklin team (13-1-1) out of Tri-Valley on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Unatego/Franklin defeated B-G 5-1 when these two teams met on September 30.

Greene:

The Greene Trojans defeated Delhi on Thursday with a 2-0 victory in a MAC crossover (Division I vs Division II) game. Greene (8-6-1) finished second to Afton/Harpursville in the division. Greene is currently listed as a nine seed and will play at IAC League’s Union Springs/ Port Byron on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Girls Soccer:

The Norwich Purple Tornado, along with Unadilla Valley, Bainbridge-Guilford and Oxford will represent Chenango County in Sectionals this season. Norwich moved up to Class A while UV, B-G, and Oxford support Class C.

Norwich:

Norwich is one of just three teams in Class A sectionals this season, along with Maine-Endwell and Owego. The Purple Tornado, who finished 3-10 on the season, have some time to prepare before heading to play Owego on Saturday, October 21 at 3:30 p.m.

UV:

The Unadilla Valley Storm concluded a strong regular season with a 10-2 record and 6-0 against its own division. The Storm will face Division I’s Sidney in the MAC championship on Saturday in Oneonta. UV defeated Sidney 3-2 when these two teams met on Tuesday.

The Storm, a four seed, will host Delhi on Wednesday, October 18 at 3:30 p.m. UV defeated Delhi 3-2 on September 18.

B-G:

After a strong start to the season, the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats fell at some close games. However, they still did well enough to make sectionals with a 8-6-1 record, behind UV in the MAC.

B-G, as a seven seed, will host IAC’s Groton on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Oxford:

The Oxford Blackhawks fought their way into sectionals, especially with a win-streak throughout the final five games, and moved back to a Class C this year from a previous D in 2022. Oxford concluded its regular season with a 5-2 loss to Unatego on Thursday to finish 6-9 and in third in MAC division II.

The Blackhawks, an 11 seed, travel to take on IAC’s Marathon on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
