SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Marauders and the Whitney Point Eagles PONY League teams faced each other in a doubleheader on a humid Wednesday evening. Sherburne won both games in 10 runs plus fashion, picking up their first two wins of the 2023 summer season.

Game one

Game one went to three innings instead of five due to Sherburne building a dynamic lead and to the time it took to get through the game since they had to play another one. Sherburne won 16-4.

The Marauders batted around the lineup in the first inning as the “away” team, putting up six runs. Cooper Roy drove in two runs off a bouncer that went past the shortstop into center field. Roy finished the game perfect at the plate with three base hits, including a triple in the third.

Sherburne scored eight runs in the top of the third inning, where again they batted around. The Marauders also finished the game with 14 hits.

Whitney Point got on the board in the first and second innings, scoring three in the first and one run in the second and were held to one hit through three innings.

Game two

After a brief 15 minute break, both teams prepared for game two. This time, the Marauders took the field first as the home team and sealed the doubleheader victory 13-1 in five innings.

Whitney Point took a brief 1-0 lead off Caleb Neuenschwander before the Sherburne defense closed out the top half of the first inning with a pick-off at third, set up by catcher Levi Neuenschwander and third basemen Jack Penoyer.

Sherburne quickly went to work as they did in the previous game. However, they didn’t bat around this time and scored four runs to take the lead. Wesley Fisher tied the game at one on a 3-1 count before scoring on a wild pitch during Landyn Morgan’s at-bat. Fisher finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Neuenschwander and the defense continued to hold Whitney Point from any scoring chances, including another successful pick-off in the fourth inning. Caleb struck out 11 batters through five innings.

Sherburne scored seven runs in the third and two final runs in the fourth inning. Owen Brown drove in a pair on a double, deep to center field in the third inning, where the Marauders batted through the lineup. Cooper Roy also had a two-run single after the Eagles made a pitching change in the same third inning.
