PONY League Baseball: Norwich “A” Stays Undefeated While Norwich “B” Drops To Delhi

CHENANGO COUNTY – Both Norwich PONY League teams were in action on Thursday. The “A” team picked up a 8-4 win in Sherburne as the “B” team lost the lead at home against Delhi to fall 12-6. The Norwich “A” team remains undefeated while the “B” team has dropped the last three games.

The Norwich “A” team was down 2-0 after the second inning to tie the game at four a piece before taking the overall lead in the fifth. The Purple Tornado scored four runs in the fifth inning, led by Zack Parker with a two-run single. Parker went 3-for-4 at the plate and stole five of 11 total stolen bases. Kassen Stubb also tallied two of Norwich’s eight hits.

Mike Brunick earned the start on the mound for Norwich and went four innings, allowing four runs on three hits, and struck out five batters. Zack Parker finished the game and struck out five batters in a clean and scoreless outing.

Sherburne collected three hits in the loss with Cooper Roy, Landyn Morgan, and Levi Neuenschwander each contributing with one a piece. Wesley Fisher drove in one run with a groundout in the first inning.

Fisher pitched four innings for the Marauders, where he struck out four batters and gave up two runs on three hits. Caleb and Levi Neuenschwander pitched one inning and two innings in relief respectively.

Norwich (3-0) will travel to take on a tough Bainbridge-Guilford team while Sherburne (0-2) heads to Whitney Point. Both games are scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m.

The Norwich “B” team started off strong against Delhi as their offense went to work with a three-run first inning. Brooks Boland drove in two runs with a long single.

Unfortunately, Delhi answered back with three of their own in the top of the second inning, but Norwich pushed through and held them in the third inning to tally on three more runs. Boland again contributed with his third RBI of the night with a groundout.

Delhi took control throughout the remainder of the contest and scored in the fourth through seventh innings to capture a comfortable lead. At that time, Norwich was held scoreless.

Norwich tallied four hits in the loss. Ethan Willis, Brooks Boland, Thomas O’Connor, and James Sprague all had one hit a piece. Sprague also stole five of Norwich’s 11 total stolen bases.

Pierce Sherman started the game on the mound for the Purple Tornado, where he went three and two-thirds and struck out six batters. Ethan Willis and James Sprague pitched in relief with Willis working three innings and struck out six batters. Sprague got the final out in the seventh inning.

Norwich (0-3) hosts Unatego on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
