Local Trackletes Compete At NYSPHSAA Outdoor Championship

MIDDLETOWN - The Bainbridge-Guilford, Norwich, and Unadilla Valley track teams sent multiple athletes to the 2023 NYSPHSAA outdoor track and field championship held this past weekend in Middletown, NY. These athletes earned the trip to states after qualifying in the previous state qualifiers event and by excelling all season for their respective teams.

B-G:

Ethne Degan and the girls 4x800 team represented the B-G Bobcats at states. Degan, who excelled in the 1500 meter run all season long, finished 11th in the prominent event, where she ran a season and personal-best of 4:37.39 that places on the NY Top 25 list. Degan, along with Maddie Ingham, Laila Williams, and Lainelle Brazee, worked hard all season in the 4x800 event and achieved a season best time of 10:21.70 for 28th place. Congratulations Bobcats.

Norwich:

The Norwich Purple Tornado Boys team sent several members to the state championships after a strong 2023 season. Richard Fuller and Gabe Decker both earned a 14th place finish in their individual events. Fuller took 14th in the 400 meter dash (50.62 seconds) while Decker, who broke the school record this season, finished 14th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.41.

Fuller, Decker, Spencer Root, and Holden Ryan ran together for a solid 13th place finish in the 4x100 event with a time of 44.15 seconds. Aleks Smietana finished his senior year for Norwich with his season-best discus throw of 117 feet, nine inches for 18th place. Congratulations Norwich.

The Storm brought their two fastest girls to states as Gracie Gorrell and Jaiden Schrag had a fantastic spring season. Gracie participated in the 200 and 400 events with a best finish in the 400 meter dash as she took 13th (59.47). In the 200 meter, she missed the cut for finals as she finished 21st in the prelims with a time of 26.51 seconds. Schrag also missed the cut for finals as she finished 13th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.73. Congratulations ladies.
