NORWICH — The Chenango Arts Council has a fun-filled month planned, with events ranging from workshops, to gallery openings, to musical auditions.

Kicking off the month is a Make Your Own Greeting Cards workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, taught by Jackie Williams.

"She’s done different card making workshops before, and she’ll provide kits for people to make different kinds of greeting cards," said Chenango Arts Council Administrative Assistant Mary Beth Miller. "You can make your own greeting card for any number of events."

All supplies will be included, and pre-registration is required to attend. To register, visit ChenangoArts.org or call the Chenango Arts Council at 607-336-2787. Attendance is $15 for members and $17 for non-members.

The following week on Friday, May 12, the Arts Council will be hosting a gallery opening featuring the work of Greene-based artist Mark Williams. The gallery opens at 5:30 p.m. in the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries, and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided by The Cottage Bakery.

The gallery will include 50 years worth of work done by Williams, which Miller said are abstract pieces full of bright colors.

"He has been painting for over 50 years, and a lot of his paintings are very colorful and abstract and inspired by his travels," said Miller. "It’ll have all kinds of works from different points in his painting career."

Local thespians will also have the opportunity to audition for the upcoming Norwich Theater Company production of "The Wizard of Oz." Auditions will be held in the Chenango Arts Council Martin W. Kappel Theater from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 19 and 22, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 20.

Attendees should come prepared to sing, read lines from the show, and perform some light choreography. Organizers recommend those auditioning wear comfortable dance shoes and clothes.

Those interested in auditioning that can't make the scheduled audition times are welcome to contact the show's director Michael Clark at miketakingphotos@gmail.com, or the Chenango Arts Council at 607-336-2787. Show dates are scheduled for July 28, 29, and 30. More information can be found on the Norwich Theater Company, Inc. Facebook page.

"It’s a lot of music from Broadway shows," said Miller. "Older shows, newer shows, and it's an ensemble performance."

The evening will feature 11 local performers showcasing Broadway songs from both classic and modern shows. In addition to entertainment, the night will also include complimentary desserts provided by Nina's Pizzeria, door prizes, raffles, a cash bar, and a complimentary champagne toast at the end of the evening.
