SIDNEY – Coming off a big win against Oxford, the Greene Trojans softball team traveled to Sidney on Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans held on to a 4-3 lead against a tough Warriors team.

Both of Greene and Sidney starting pitchers had a strong outing, not allowing a run up until the fourth inning. Greene got on the board first as Payton Yahner reached on an error to lead off the inning before advancing into scoring position on a fielder’s choice. Abby Yahner hit a sacrifice fly to send in Payton from third base.

Sidney answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the same inning. An error by the Trojans drove in two runs before a run scored on an RBI double. Sidney racked up five hits in total, but left runners stranded in scoring position to limit their damage to only those three runs.

Greene had a strong sixth inning to tie the game as Kenzie Button and Abby Yahner hit back-to-back singles. Both scored on a RBI double by Rhea Malmquist. Malmquist failed to score, even on a double from Audra Doll.

With the game tied at three in the seventh, McKenzie Scott provided the game-winner with a solo home run and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Payton Yahner struck out two batters and cleanly fielded a bunt in her duty on the mound to close up the game and earn the victory. Payton allowed the three runs (two unearned) on five hits, walked one batter, and struck out 16 through seven innings.

Greene (5-1) hosts Deposit-Hancock on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
