UV And B-G Compete At NY/PA Track Invite

WINDSOR – On Saturday, the Unadilla Valley and Bainbridge-Guilford track teams opened the 2023 outdoor season in Windsor for the NY/PA Invitational. For the girls, UV finished fifth while B-G came in eighth with Niskayuna earning the victory. Corning came in first place for the boys while B-G tied with South Kortright for 13th and UV tied with Newark Valley for 16th.

B-G and UV were the only local teams from the Chenango County area to compete at this event. Many key indoor track athletes jumped right into the outdoor season fresh and ready to go while the newcomers were welcomed with solid performances of their own.

UV

After some record-breaking action in the indoor track season, the Unadilla Valley Storm were prepared for outdoor season with several athletes starting off strong.

Gracie Gorrell earned two top finishes in her respective sprinting events. She led the way in the 200 meter dash with a new time of 26.30 seconds before taking the 400 meter dash in 59.72 seconds. Seventh grader Molly Gorrell ran the 400 event in 1:08.64 to finish in 13th place.

Jaiden Schrag achieved three top five finishes on the day. She came in second for the 100 meter hurdles behind Montrose’s Chloe Diaz (15.90) with a time of 17.16 seconds. She also finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.31. For fielding, she jumped 14 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the long jump for fourth place.

Other notable performances from the girls include a 10th place finish by Natalya Schrag in the 800 meter run while Kalie Fernandez-Naughton came in 13th for shot put (26-9.5).

Haywood Edwards, Jacob Prentice, Tucker Cattanach, Blake Wright, and Trason Murray led the Storm on the boys’ side.

Edwards earned third place in the 400 meter hurdles finishing with a new best time of 1:02.77. Prentice joined for the outdoor season, where he finished 11th in the 400 meter run which he ran in 56.12 seconds. Teammate Blake Wright earned the 10th spot for discus with an impressive throw of 91 feet, 10 inches that marked second in his respective flight.

Wright also came in 18th place for the shot put (33-2) as Trason Murray finished ahead in 12th place with a throw of 36 feet, 3 1/4 inches.

Tucker Cattanach achieved 10th in the high jump event with a jump of five feet exactly (5-0). He also came in 11th for the triple jump (35-2.5).

B-G

The Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats saw notable performances from Maddie Ingham, Ethne Degan, and Emily Sprow for the girls while Collin Dicks led the boys.

Ingham led all B-G sprinters with a first place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:31.05, setting a new personal best. Teammate Lainelle Brazee ran for an 11th place finish, where she picked up a new best time of 2:50.04.

Ingham and Brazee helped the 4x800 meter relay team with Vanessa Brazee and Laila Williams to a sixth place finish. Ingham, Emily Sprow, Elanor Sprow, and Annika Armstrong finished fourth in the 4x100 meter relay, which they completed in 55.97 seconds.

Degan finished second in the girls’ 3000 meter run behind Elmira’s Ana (Vicky) Mordvinova (10:26.74) with a time of 10:50.23. Outside of sprinting, Emily Sprow triple jumped 30 feet, seven inches to finish fifth with teammate Lainelle Brazee finishing 15th (25-6.25).

In the high jump event, Olivia Nichols came in 10th with a jump of four feet, four inches as Laila Williams finished 14th (4-0).

Colin Dicks competed in three events, where he earned top 10 finishes in all. His best performance of the day came in the long jump. He jumped 19 feet, one inch for third place. He came in sixth place for the triple jump event (37-3.75). He also picked up a sixth place finish in the 100 meter dash, marking a new best time of 11.67 seconds.

Junior Connor Vredenburgh kicked off his outdoor season in the discus throw event. He threw the discus 88 feet, 10 inches, which helped him finish second in his assigned flight, but 11th overall. He also competed in the shot put with a throw of 34-7 for 15th place.

Both UV and B-G teams are on schedule to resume next week.

UV will host its only meet of the season, honoring its seniors prior to the meet on Wednesday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m. Aside from UV, the meet will feature Harpursville/Afton, Delhi, Unatego and Greene.

On the other hand, B-G will be at Sidney on April 12 along with Deposit-Hancock, Oxford, and Walton.
