NORWICH – The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) welcomes visitors to a new exhibit opening from 3 to 5 p.m. on March 12. “Sixpence in Your Shoe: A Glimpse at Chenango County Wedding Traditions” ushers in the museum’s exhibit season with a celebration of matrimonial ceremonies and festivities.

Timeless traditions meet the unique charm of local communities in this exhibit encompassing nearly 200 years of wedding history rooted in Chenango County. Guests will explore the origins of classic wedding hallmarks and enjoy stories of enduring love, while viewing breath-taking wedding keepsakes.

“Wedding customs connect our local communities and bring families together,” said CCHS Executive Director Jessica Moquin. “Our museum has a vast collection of family keepsakes, particularly wedding dresses and related pieces. This thoughtfully curated exhibit features priceless mementos which reflect the treasured memories of our Chenango County heritage.”

During the exhibit opening, guests will enjoy wedding cake prepared by Norwich’s Cottage Bakery made from a 19th century recipe in the CCHS cookbook “Made Nine Pies.” As a “wedding favor,” each guest will be given a complimentary copy of “Made Nine Pies,” while supplies last.

First established in 1939, CCHS is the primary organization dedicated to actively and comprehensively preserving the history of Chenango County. The area’s premier heritage museum, the organization celebrates local culture – unique traditions, noteworthy residents, and unusual stories of the region.

Regular hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, and admission is a free-will donation left up to each visitor’s discretion. CCHS programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
