BINGHAMTON – After winning the Sectional championship, the Oxford Lady Blackhawks took center court at the Visions FCU Veterans Memorial Arena for Regionals.

Standing tall all season, the Blackhawks played fierce and unstoppable to defeat Smithtown Christian 70-44. Now, Oxford reigns as one of the final four contenders in the State at the Class D level.

Oxford did not know what to expect from their section 11 opponent as both teams played a close first quarter. As the half continued, Oxford found a rhythm on both ends of the court to take a 24-13 lead at halftime.

Their offense took full control following halftime and excelled off foul troubles from the Knights, who had three players foul out. Oxford’s defense succeeded in collecting rebounds with a total of 25 on the day and 42 rebounds altogether. The Blackhawks never lost momentum once as they extended their lead to 30 points late in the contest, giving their bench players more playing time.

Madalyn Barrows continues to have a strong final season as she scored a team-high 26 points, including 14 points in the third quarter and hit four three’s. She also collected 13 rebounds in the win. Behind Barrows, Kyla Kelsey-Jones and Ella Kelsey both had nine points and played stellar on defense. Naiomi Smith saw several touches and scored seven points while Jocie Finch remained confident in her three-point shooting with two for six points.

Oxford heads to Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY on Saturday for the state semifinals. The Blackhawks will play host to section two’s Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons, who defeated Seton Catholic Central. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. Tickets must be pre-purchased through GoFan.co.
