February Is National Children’s Dental Health Month
Published: February 20th, 2023

CHENANGO COUNTY — Each February National Children’s Dental Health Month is celebrated in an effort to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, adults, and caregivers. Developing good brushing and flossing habits at an early age is very important. Dental cavities are one of the most common chronic issues in children and teens. Cavities are caused by a breakdown of the tooth enamel by acids produced by bacteria located in a film that collects on teeth. Left untreated, cavities can cause pain, infection, and problems eating, speaking, and learning.

Small changes to daily drinking habits can make a positive difference to an individual’s health. Drinking water is important for overall health and well-being. Drinking water is a healthy alternative to sugary drinks such as soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks or sports drinks. It helps you stay hydrated so you can learn and focus. Drinking more water prevents weight gain, dental cavities, and decreases risk for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Most cavities in children can be prevented. Here are some tips to help keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy.

Wean your child from the bottle to a cup by the age of 12 to 14 months. Serve juice in a cup (only) and limit the amount to four to six ounces per day. Do not put your child to sleep with a bottle.

Give your child water several times a day- with fluoride if possible. Keep sugared drinks and sodas to a minimum or not at all. Serve healthy foods to your child like fresh fruits and vegetables each day. Serve fewer sweets like candy, cookies, or cakes in your household.

If your child has not been to the dentist by one years old, make an appointment. Help your child brush at least two times a day, after breakfast and before bed – making sure he/she spits out the toothpaste after brushing. Use of dental sealants are an effective way to prevent cavities. Ask your dentist about the appropriate time to use them.

Secondhand smoke can cause dental problems in children. Do not allow smoking in your home or in your car. Quitting smoking will also improve dental health.

Set a good example. Make taking care of your teeth a high priority. Visit your dentist regularly and get your teeth cleaned twice per year. Buy new toothbrushes.
