EARLVILLE — What has the kind of blues you'll find in a barrelhouse in New Orleans, driven by harmonicas, tuba, drums, guitars, banjo, and a full horn section? Why it’s Hazmat Modine! The Earlville Opera House is thrilled to present this special production on Saturday, February 25 at 7 p.m. on its historic Main Stage.

Hazmat Modine has toured the world for over 15 years playing in 40 different countries. From Borneo to British Columbia, China to India, Brazil to New Zealand, throughout Europe and into Siberia. The band distills American music into an essence from its myriad forms: blues, country, R & B, rock-n-roll, jazz, gospel, world music, soul, roots... Yet it adds to this mixture something raw and mysterious that feels at once familiar and new.

Their newest album “Box of Breath” is a collection of unique and original material. Hazmat is deep in command of their self-created idiom — swimming in international waters but never far from the American coast. Malian riffs infuse with Mississippi mud and Tin Pan Alley, stretching the band’s roots aesthetic to include notes of hibiscus and the buzz of mosquitos.

There are songs about death, striving, hoarding, time, and the march of dementia. Soaring horns and wailing harmonica are joined by the clang of modern India and the murmur of China, a distillation of Hazmat Modine’s travels through time, place, and sound. Throughout, the CD weaves lyrics that reflect on the times and troubles of the world we currently live in. This is the band's most mature and original album yet, something so Hazmatian that it needs its own genre to define it.
